This book is fantastic on so many levels. It's beautifully written and tackles complex issues we all face, but rarely address in our own lives. Who are we? Who do we want to be? What kind of life do we want to lead? Are we brave enough to question decisions we've made, reassess our choices, go against the norm? Following the adventures and yearning of both Barbara Newhall Follett and Laura Smith took me through my own existential journey, and was tremendously captivating.Laura Smith's writing is refreshingly honest, and while her book encouraged me to ask questions about my own life, which I was nervous to address, I felt like a more honest and true version of myself after doing so. Though I read it quickly (happily couldn't put it down), the themes of the book have stayed with me and helped me engage with my own choices. I appreciate this book and the author so much for this.

The Art of Vanishing A Memoir of Wanderlust Laura Smith 9780399563584 Books Reviews
Based on a summary, I was expecting a travel memoir of the author's time in Asia. Instead I was suprised by a beautifully woven story of two marriages spanning different times and travels. As the author searches for the story of Barbara's disapperance, she also explores an open sexual relationship which leads to questions about her own marriage. This book is a beautifully honest look at the ebb and flow of relationships between lovers, parents, and friends. Laura gives a glimpse into the private world of her marriage and how you can accidently find yourselves adrift in love.
The evolution of Laura's relationship is well balanced with the magic and mystery surrounding Barbara's life and eventual dissapearance. As a woman in my late 20s, I was captivated by Laura and Barbara's battles for adventure verses stability. It's a relatable feeling and she captured how daily life can both wear you down and protect you.
Laura is a true storyteller and I look forward to seeing what she creates next.
The level of research and loving details throughout this book is what kept me enthralled. Laura Smith tells the unique story of Barbara with the same (maybe even more) care as her own.
Not what I expected. After getting into the theme and characters I can recommend for individuals with strong personalities.
I loved this book! I could not put it down.Laura Smith is a fabulous author. Great story. I was sad when it ended.
I was very disappointed in this book. I maybe did not research it enough but it seems to be a fairy tale in some kind of very weird story line.
The memoir reads very well . It has a very good back and forth style of comparing and contrasting her life story in thoughts and actions with her role model character life story thoughts and behaviors. I often thought I was reading some forbidden diary as the author is very candid and forthcoming of her most secret thoughts . Inhibitions don't seem to get in the way even if the thought is just a trial examination. The research on the main character was impressive in its perseverance and discipline for finding the truth around her character. I really enjoyed the story but at times her open candidness was cringing- as with a sense of voyeurism.
I read this memoir in an evening, unable to put it down and heart pounding as I got wrapped up simultaneously in a mystery and a story of modern love. The author's search for Barbara and satisfaction of her own wanderlust weave together surprisingly seamlessly, and I found myself 100% along for the ride.
